3rd June 2015, SINGAPORE – The SOSD and Assisi Hospice is organizing a unique charity run on 3rd October 2015, at the East Coast Park to raise funds for both organisations.  Titled the “Light Up Your Life Run”, this distinctive evening event features various lighting themes and fun-filled activities for all ages.

The non-competitive event is opened to the public. Categories for participation include the individual 5 km and 10 km run, as well as the 2 km dog walk (dog accompanied by owner).  Every participant will receive a goodie bag worth up to S$250, including a limited edition event T-shirt, a bottle of vitamins, pet food from Wellness, energy bar and vouchers from our generous sponsors such as Delifrance and Renault. (Please refer to the annex for information on the race categories and registration fees.)

Dr Siew Tuck Wah, President of SOSD said, “The Light Up Your Life Charity Run epitomizes SOSD’s vision of promoting positive interaction between humans and animals. We have expanded our involvement in the community through our Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) programme and are pleased to partner with Assisi Hospice to launch this innovative event to bring kindness and hope to the less fortunate – for both animals and humans alike.”

A/Prof Premanrani Kannusamy, CEO, Assisi Hospice said “Our patients with life-limiting illnesses receive care not only from our staff – they are also cheered by others, including the team from SOSD’s AAA programme. This charity run invites the community to understand and support palliative care. Life is like a run, let’s help them finish the race well”.

Participants and members of the public can also enjoy activities on the sidelines of the charity run, including a mini-carnival that will feature various stalls and family activities at the event site. Details on the mini-carnival will be available closer to the event date.

The funds raised from this event will go towards the operating expenses for both charities and supporting SOSD in implementing more community-focused initiatives such as the AAA programme that will benefit both people and animals and increase social awareness.

About SOSD

SOSD is unified by the common passion and conviction to be the voice of our homeless strays, to champion their cause and to bring about a positive change in their lives. Our group objectives are simple. We focus on advocating for the strays, and assisting in managing the integration and acceptance of mongrels in society. Our mission is to save our street dogs and give them a chance in life, to the best of our ability. Until each dog has a refuge; a home to call its own and in which it is dearly loved. Visit http://sosd.org.sg for more information.

Animal-Assisted Activities, or AAA, are activities involving the use of animals – often dogs but sometimes, other animals such as cats, to provide opportunities for motivation, education, or recreation to enhance the quality of life of persons in need, through human-animal interactions. AAA is delivered in various environments by specially trained professionals, paraprofessionals, and volunteers in association with animals that meet specific criteria.

Healing Paws: Enhancing Lives Through Creature Comforts

We believe that there is no gift like the gift of companionship. Healing Paws was started in Jan 2014 with that in mind, aiming to provide comfort and warmth to persons in need via Animal-Assisted-Activities (AAA). Through the programme, owners and their dogs volunteer their time in institutions such as children’s homes, elderly homes, and hospices, providing companionship, motivation, and recreation. Healing Paws strongly resonates with SOSD’s core values of love, compassion, and tolerance to all living beings, humans and animals alike. It is also a way for SOSD’s rescued dogs to say thank you, and give back, to the society, which has given them a second chance in life.
