The following press release should help runners better prepare for the coming race in May. The route does not seem to differ much from last year, albeit a few changes in some sections earlier on in the race. I’ m a bit disappointed with the move to start at the F1 Pit Building (not exactly close to the nearest MRT station per se), but as long as the congestion is controlled, the race should be fine.
ORGANISERS UNVEIL ALL-EXCITING ROUTES THAT WILL SEE SINGAPORE’S BIGGEST NIGHT RACE BRING RUNNERS PAST ICONIC NEW CITY LANDMARKS
[11 MARCH 2013, SINGAPORE] – Organisers of Sundown Marathon 2013 – HiVelocity Events Pte Ltd – today unveiled a race route with hints of a few new elements that will take runners past some of Singapore’s world-renowned attractions. The Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay and Singapore Flyer, as well as the soon-to-be-completed Singapore Sports Hub will be added to the latest edition that will take place over two nights on 31st May and 1st June this year.
The three race routes (Marathon, Half marathon and 10km) have been carefully mapped out to trace part of the route of the Republic’s other night race – the Singapore F1 Grand Prix. So perhaps it is only appropriate that the event is set to flag-off at the F1 Pit Building, just like its four-wheel counterpart.
Half and full marathon runners can expect to pound the streets of the Lion City which will take them by the recently-launched Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Financial Centre and the upcoming Singapore Sports Hub in the reverse direction to previous routes before passing through the Floating Platform and heading for the checked flag at the world’s largest giant observation wheel – Singapore Flyer.
10km runners will also be in for a treat, as they will begin their quest for glory at the F1 Pit Building before passing through Suntec City, Singapore Sports Hub, Kallang Riverside Park and Marina Promenade.
Participants of the half marathon category will begin their race at 11.30pm on 31st May followed shortly by the 10km set out at 12.30am on 1st June. The gruelling 42km full-marathon race will start at 11.30pm on 1st June. Registration fees for the three races are priced at $53 (10km), $60 (Half Marathon) and $80 (Marathon).
Said Adrian Mok, Director of HiVelocity Events Pte Ltd: “Thanks to the F1 Night Race, Singapore has become known globally for its magnificent cityscape at night. It is even more spectacular this year with the completion of the beautiful Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay Financial Centre.”
“With the Sundown Marathon heading into its sixth edition this year, we wanted runners to experience this amazing urban landscape to motivate them as they run and perhaps get a glimpse of what its like to race on part of the F1 route and will flag-off at the F1 Pit Building. It will also be a great treat for all our overseas participants!” he further enthused.
